Over the years, it led to some new (for me) insights, such as: transmission draws a “huge” 25 mA, but it’s still negligible because the duration is only a few milliseconds. Thus started the long and fascinating journey of trying to run a JeeNode on as little power as possible – something most people probably know this weblog best for. It really didn’t add up, in terms of cost, and especially since the data was already being exchanged wirelessly! Not only do you need a power outlet nearby, you need fat power adapters, and you have to claim all those power outlets for permanent use. So far, I just worked off the premise that these nodes needed to be plugged into a power adapter – but there are plenty of cases where that is extremely cumbersome. Untethered operation also implies being self-powered:Įvidently, having lots of nodes around the house would not work if batteries had to be swapped every few weeks. It took me a full year to realise that a wireless “node” tied to a wire to run for an extended period of time made no sense. Being “untethered” in many projects at that time, meant being able to do something for a few hours or a day, and swapping or recharging batteries at night was easy, right? Everyone was running Arduino’s off either a 5V USB adapter or – occasionally – off a battery pack, and never much more than a few days. The necessity to run on battery power was something I had completely missed in the beginning. But I completely ignored the power issue… During all this early experimentation in 20, I quickly zoomed in on the little ATmega + RFM12B combo as a way to collect data around the house. ![]() ![]() ![]() First Class Customer Service: You no longer need a pitch-dark room to get a good image Enjoy your favorite movies and TV shows anywhere in your home, day or night. You can enjoy a cinematic experience from the comfort of your own theater! I will take the opportunity to train myself up on Reaper with this Mac I think. I really can't afford it - it cost me a heap to get the S/H copy of LE 8 with the Mbox 2 - thankfully it runs well on Windows 7 - despite the odd crash. I might have one more go with Pro Tools now that I have got the Mbox functional with the latest driver but I think that when they left Pro Tools 8 behind the Mac systems must have had some different stuff under the hood and Avid would probably just prefer people buy the newer version of PT rather than work on compatibility issue between newer OS systems and older versions of their software. Reason through Rewire keeps crashing because of some unknown problem with file permissions. It's a VST plugin that I run through the FXPansion 2.1 VST-RTAS adapater (it runs perfectly on Reaper). My favorite Synth Tyrell Nexus 6 would not respond properly. Anyway, after updating to 8.0.5 the PT system is just glitchy - especially with all the midi stuff. ![]() Even with the recovered installer I just can't get all of those plugins installed without it crashing - I also had to get things like Sansamp, Auto Panning and the BF76 compressor from the Avid website as individual downloads. I downloaded and used the 8.03 updater in combination with the install disk and got it to install but the Creative Collection with the A.I.R plugins and virtual instruments will not install off the disk - it always fails - and this was the case with Snow Leopard too! I spent two days using recovery software to extract the Creative Collection installer off the disk as a separate file - it seems to be damaged on the Mac layer of the DVD but the recovery software managed to pull it off. Just to explained what happened: the installer for PT 8.0 will not work off the installation disk on this Mac. I have PT 8 installed on two Window machines so it's no real loss to me here. Now I do have the Mbox working with Reaper and Reason - so I don't have to fork out for new hardware to go with this Mac. After the install of the drivers (links below) you have to delete the two Digidesign folders in "/Library/Startupitems", as they cause pop-up warnings when you boot up, and you also have to plug the Mbox into a USB port after booting. But, I did eventually get my Mbox 2 Factory up and running with recent Avid updates however it was something of a hassle. I upgraded to Mountain Lion and after many attempted re-installs of PT 8 I just couldn't get it all working properly. I did have Pro Tools (PT) LE 8.0.5 kind of running with Snow Leopard on a 2010ish Mac Book Pro (2.4ghz Intel Core Duo 2, 4gb ram) but it had install issues that left it under-equipped in the plugin department. ![]() Its almost meaningless to discuss here unless you have a good idea of your exact requirements and budget. a UAD Apollo, and a lot of lower-priced interfaces that sound great (but without Pro Tools bundle). There are more really nice higher end interfaces out there that cost more, e.g. (But so can buying an Eleven Rack bundle and then buying a separate more capable interface). The bundle with pro Tools 11 can be attractive. but don't have a lto fo gain if you need that. The Mbox 3 Pro is fairly well regarded, had a rocky start with some product hardware issues, seems to have better preamps/analog and converters than previous mBoxes etc. We don't know exactly your requirements, # preamps/DI inputs, # line inputs/outputs etc., what digital interfaces you want? Do you want/need ADAT/SMUX? What hardware monitoring capability if any? Want Firewire? USB? The first two Punic Wars ended with Rome in full control of Sicily, the western Mediterranean and much of Spain. Rome then fought a series of wars known as the Punic Wars with Carthage, a powerful city-state in northern Africa. Though the Gauls sacked and burned Rome in 390 B.C., the Romans rebounded under the leadership of the military hero Camillus, eventually gaining control of the entire Italian peninsula by 264 B.C. Military Expansionĭuring the early republic, the Roman state grew exponentially in both size and power. By around 300 B.C., real political power in Rome was centered in the Senate, which at the time included only members of patrician and wealthy plebeian families. These laws included issues of legal procedure, civil rights and property rights and provided the basis for all future Roman civil law. In 450 B.C., the first Roman law code was inscribed on 12 bronze tablets–known as the Twelve Tables–and publicly displayed in the Roman Forum. Politics in the early republic was marked by the long struggle between patricians and plebeians (the common people), who eventually attained some political power through years of concessions from patricians, including their own political bodies, the tribunes, which could initiate or veto legislation. ![]() The magistrates, though elected by the people, were drawn largely from the Senate, which was dominated by the patricians, or the descendants of the original senators from the time of Romulus. They also served as commanders in chief of the army. The power of the monarch passed to two annually elected magistrates called consuls. Rome was built on seven hills, known as “the seven hills of Rome”-Esquiline Hill, Palatine Hill, Aventine Hill, Capitoline Hill, Quirinal Hill, Viminal Hill and Caelian Hill. Rome’s era as a monarchy ended in 509 B.C. While they were referred to as “Rex,” or “King” in Latin, all the kings after Romulus were elected by the senate.ĭid you know? Four decades after Constantine made Christianity Rome's official religion, Emperor Julian-known as the Apostate-tried to revive the pagan cults and temples of the past, but the process was reversed after his death, and Julian was the last pagan emperor of Rome. There are seven legendary kings of Rome: Romulus, Numa Pompilius, Tullus Hostilius, Ancus Martius, Lucius Tarquinius Priscus (Tarquin the Elder), Servius Tullius and Tarquinius Superbus, or Tarquin the Proud (534-510 B.C.). A line of Sabine, Latin and Etruscan (earlier Italian civilizations) kings followed in a non-hereditary succession. After killing his brother, Romulus became the first king of Rome, which is named for him. Left to drown in a basket on the Tiber by a king of nearby Alba Longa and rescued by a she-wolf, the twins lived to defeat that king and found their own city on the river’s banks in 753 B.C. by Romulus and Remus, twin sons of Mars, the god of war. An example of one of the prototypes, shown in all 5 icon variations The icons were randomly assigned for each task, meaning that participants saw a random assortment and order of these five icons. The icons tested in this study included a downward-facing caret, a right-facing arrow, a plus, a nonsense foil icon (used as a control for comparison), or a blank space. ![]() ![]() We created a foil icon (that had not been used before for accordions) in order to see whether the type of icon mattered at all or the presence of an icon next to the accordion name was enough to signal an accordion (but the icon itself did not matter). We also created 5 different variations for each prototype each variation used one of 4 possible icons (an arrow, a caret, a plus, a foil) or no icon. For example, on a prototype of consumer-goods review website, the task was “Find reviews of dishwashers.” The prototypes were not interactive they were simple mockups with the menu already open and a list of categories visible on the screen, to ensure that we were only measuring the interaction with the accordions, as opposed to users’ efforts to locate the menus, look at homepage content, and so forth.įor each prototype, we created a task that involved finding information in one of the accordions visible in the prototype. We decided to study the accordions in the context of mobile navigation so we created 11 prototypes of mobile websites, each in a different type of industry - clothing ecommerce, big-box retail, auto parts, finance, news, local government, higher education, DIY home projects, consumer-goods reviews, healthcare, and travel. We performed a quantitative study to find out which of these icons is the most effective at signaling that it will open an accordion. Jennair: Accordion signaled by caret icon Bolé Road Textiles: accordion signaled by plus icon Ferrari: accordion signaled by arrow icon Braun: accordion with no signifier icon Also, after expansion, the caret will typically twist (maybe in a nice quick animation), and a plus sign will turn into a minus, to become a signifier for the reverse action of collapsing the newly expanded content. There are some subtle differences in what these icons are commonly used to represent - while the caret and plus icons are typically meant to indicate that an accordion will open, designers have used the right-facing arrow icon to signal two different actions: either staying on the same page and expanding content, or visiting a different page. ![]() We looked at several possible icons as signifiers for accordions: We decided to investigate this question as part of a bigger study of navigation and subnavigation on mobile. For good reasons, accordions are a popular UI element today: on mobile, they are an essential tool because they collapse content and make page length manageable, but even on desktop, they mitigate visual complexity and allow users to focus on the content most relevant for the task at hand (and are particularly appropriate in complex applications).Ī question that is often asked in both our Mobile UX and Application Design classes is: which icon should we use to best signal that content will expand in place? In other words, what’s the best signifier for accordions? ![]() ![]() In this she stands in sharp contrast to Micaëla, whose Act Three aria ("Je sais que rien ne m'épouvante") is set in the ternary form of the elevated bel canto French grand opera aria. Traversing boundaries of diatonic harmony, the sultry chromaticism of Carmen's habanera theme underscores her status as both ethnic outsider and sexually adventuresome female. The gypsy fortune-teller Carmen sings in dance numbers, such as the habanera ("L'amour est un oiseau rebelle") and the seguidilla ("Près des ramparts de Seville") of Act One, and the Gypsy song ("Les tringles des sisters tintaient") of Act Two. The opera's prelude introduces some of the most important themes, including Escamillo's toreador music and an exotic and sinewy chromatic motive that permeates the opera as a musical symbol for both Carmen's character and the insurmountable power of fate. Bizet gave musical expression to the libretto using recurring motives, a distinctive melodic style, and manipulations of genre conventions to give each character a musical significance and a unique expressive idiom. Librettists Halévy and Meilhac emphasized the exotic characters of Mérimée's story and retained the themes of social class distinctions, overt sexuality, and misogyny that emerge so forcefully in Mérimée's model. It is ironic that Bizet composed one of music's most evocative landscapes of Spain without ever having been there.īizet based his opéra comique on Prosper Mérimée's story, Carmen, which had appeared in October 1845. Carmen is cornerstone item in any opera collection. ![]() There is also a popular orchestral suite drawn from the opera, and several violin and piano fantasies on its themes also exist. In recent years the original version has made a striking comeback, and one can argue that it is far more telling dramatically than the traditional version with the recitatives. Guiraud converted the original sections of spoken dialogue into recitative for the 1875 Vienna performances. With a libretto by Ludovic Halévy and Henri Meilhac, Carmen survives in no single authoritative version despite its enormous popularity and influence. Bizet's aim in composing Carmen had been to transform the flaccid, moralistic bourgeois genre of opéra comique into a more sophisticated type of staged work. Although almost unanimously condemned by Parisian critics after its first performances in 1875 for its overt sexuality and graphic final scene, Carmen intrigued a number of sophisticated minds and ultimately reached the public in a way that perhaps no other opera has. ![]() ![]() The reception history of Georges Bizet's final dramatic work, Carmen, is rife with ironies. ![]() |
